Leave Our Salt Alone

Don't think government, if given the chance, will try to control the most minute aspects of your life?

Don't worry that once the bureaucracy gets ahold of the right to regulate your health care decisions -- starting with what type of insurance you are required to buy -- the end result will be absurdity?

Are you one of those people who think that government has the ability to restrain itself from exercising power given to it?

Behold a proposal by a Democratic New York Assemblyman to ban restaurants from using salt in cooking:

"No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises," the bill, A. 10129 , states in part.

The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz , D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation.

Don't think that once the newly created government bureaucracies under Obamacare start passing regulations they won't tell you how to live?

Then you haven't been paying attention.

Update: And then they came for the pizza.

  1. I saw that yesterday, while blog surfing. A guy I met a few years ago moved from New York after living there all his life. His reason, "It's a police state. It's a frickin' police state in NY!" This is just more proof of his statement.

Obama and the leftists will not stop until ObamaCare controls us all; this new healthcare debacle will ALLOW the federal government to regulate every minute aspect of our lives, all under the guise of "our health." Police state, USA....? Seems that New York is showing us what the future might be, if we don't stop it.

  2. I think it is important to note that while sodium intake may have a small impact on blood pressure in people who have hypertension, salt is also necessary for life. By banning salt, we are starting down a road that will cause a lot of health problems.

  3. The left is becoming more Fascist-like by the day! At the very least, we can now start referring to them as "Salt Nazis"; however, I shudder to think what more invasive procedures they have in store for the American people if we don't halt their impending reign of tyrannical "progressivism" soon.

  4. Professor I thought you might like to see these pictures taken at the Syracuse Tea Party last April.

  5. This has to be the silliest ban yet. To ask "where will it end" is even sillier - we should be asking when will this stop? Anything, even water or oxygen, can be dangerous above certain quantities. Why not ban cars? Windows that open? Heavy boxes that can fall out of open windows? Sugar? Thumbtacks? Germs?

  6. Professor Jacobson; I wish you would give us your thoughts on the "Slaughter Solution".

  7. @DINORightMarie: In a month, I'm moving from NYC to Texas for the very same reason. My idiot democrat friends (and they all are) walk around making no connection b/w proposals like this salt one and Big Government and its insatiable desire for power and control. I cannot take it anymore. I can't be surrounded by people like this. It's making me insane.

It is a police state. But it also taxes to high heaven so that the people of NYC and NY State themselves fund politicians using their time to discuss how they can control our lives, and then pass legislation to that end. And most people in NYC are either 1) totally, idiotically blind to it, or 2) too afraid to speak up and admit their more conservative tendencies. Ignorant or spineless - those are the options here. It. Is. Pathetic.

Bloomberg is worthless too. Only AFTER the Senate passes healthcare does he speak up about how expensive ObamaCare will be for the state. He's awful, just awful. He's a progressive, willing to masquerade as whichever party makes it easier for him to run and more likely to win.

I'm done. I used to love NYC, now I just despise it.

  8. I can't wait until the healthcare reconciliation bill takes student loans away from private banks and dumps them squarely on the taxpayer's back, too! Why not!

  9. I have been a doc for 40 years. We have never, at any time indicated that a restriction in salt would do anything to your health. Their are certain, very select patients that require a low salt diet in the form of not using your salt shaker. But to eliminate salt from food would do nothing as a preventive cure. In fact, a diet without salt would lead to disease.

The same is true of diet fats. Many studies have shown that diets higher in fats are actually good for the system. I reviewed the concept of dietary cholesterol for a court case and found that dietary cholesterol has absolutely nothing to do with coronary artery diesease or any other problem. Harvard produced a study called the Hope Study that actually indicated a low cholesterol diet was associated with harmful effects. I am sure no one has seen that on the TV. Many physicians have found that higher cholesterol diets actually raise HDL levels that seem to be associated with less disease. The problem is that you can't sell statin drugs with this concept. Doctors are locked in a difficult situation with this concept as if they don't prescribe low cholesterol diets and statins, then they are considered to be practicing bad medicine.

I can assure you that if Obamacare passes, the first thing that will happen is that these so called preventive concepts will be passed on as regulations. You will have no choice in what you do, and for absolutely no reason.

On preventive care, this concept will not do a thing to reduce the need for medical services. The primary doctors promote it as the concept will enrich them. But for patients it will do nothing . The only preventive you need is to watch your blood pressure and maybe obtain a colonoscopy. Other than that, the measures do nothing as all, even for diabetes.

As I said, this bill is only the tip of the iceburg.

  10. This law has a huge loophole - what about all of the salt you can buy at supermarkets? I mean, pound after pound of the stuff. They'd better get that regulated, and quick!

  11. Here in Australia one of the most insidious invasions of health privacy is the bowel screen campaign. Once you agree to be a part of the program your results are spread in all directions to the health department and beyond. They claim that your privacy is not affected but that is not true.

I detest these government screening databases. I refuse to be on any of them. As a woman I have just agreed to have my Pap smear, and I told my doctor straight that the laboratory is not to put me on any register.

It is the same with the Breast screen and for me the same thing applies. I will not go on to any of these registers because that is where there is the biggest invasion of privacy.

If they succeed in getting Abominablecare through then you will face similar things. No one has the right to that kind of private information. They claim it is just for tracking purposes to see if the program is working... but it never stops once they get you!!!

I have signed the opt out form for the colon cancer screening. Once I find an envelope it will go in the mail. I will not participate.

  12. How exactly do they think that these restaurants can bake without using salt? Do they not understand chemistry? Oh I forgot, they think they are so much smarter than the rest of us.

Another thing that bothers me is the "panels". We don't know how they're selected, what their credentials are, how their work is to be overseen/reviewed: yet they're the ones who will be comparing patients' diagnosis codes to "approved, peer-reviewed" treatment plans; they'll have the power to refuse anything that deviates from the so-called "approved protocols". These invisible bureaucrats will be interfering in the doctor-patient relationship every step of the way.

    Gah!!!! (Imagine gagging sound.)

  15. It surprises me not at all that our NY legislature has come up with such nonsensical ideas to legislate on. The only thing that does surprise me is that it wasn't immediately passed through with a new Salt Tax to go along with it by the Governor. It might have taken the heat off of the investigations into his conduct for a while.

I am wondering though, does this mean that hospitals can no longer use saline solution as well? And if so, will it be the patient or the technician who pays the $1000 fine for each unit you receive? Talk about a health care reform measure...lol

  16. salt is actually a great digestive aid and more. I dont think anyone has the right to parent us like that. Hands off my personal life! Sign the petition against this!!!
