Cambridge Police Reject Retired Member's Wife's Candidacy for Senate

The Cambridge, Massachusetts police officers association wants to clear up the record. Just because Martha Coakley's husband is a retired Cambridge police officer, a fact which her campaign frequently mentions, they do not want you to think that they actually support Coakley.

No, the Cambridge police officers association, at the insistence of its membership, has endorsed Scott Brown for Senate (emphasis mine):

Members of our Association have inquired and requested that we endorse Scott Brown in the upcoming election against Martha Coakley.

Ms. Coakley along with some of her campaign workers have talked publicly about how her husband is a retired Cambridge Police Officer, giving appearances that she is being endorsed by the Cambridge Police. This may be an innocent insinuation but most do take this as our giving her our support and endorsement.

Yesterday, the CPPOA Executive Board voted to endorse State Senator Scott Brown in the upcoming election for US Senate. In an 11 to 2 vote, the Executive Board voted overwhelmingly in favor of the endorsement.

We do not endorse anyone who advocates changes in the health care that take away any bargaining rights or increases our cost along with our contributions. Senator Brown does not support the Comprehensive Healthcare Reform Bill and promises to be the 41st vote to ensure its defeat. The current leadership at the state house, as we all know and have seen over the past two years, have an agenda to dismantle all of our hard earned bargained benefits and they will continue to dismantle these until there is a complete change from the top down. Martha Coakley is part of this Massachusetts leadership and she will continue with this agenda, only now it will be at the capital level and we need to stop it.

So today, we the members of the Cambridge Police Patrol Officers Association endorse Scott Brown for the senate seat vacated by Senator Kennedy.

  2. Wow, just wow.

However, I am not surprised over the attitude of the Cambridge police - the ones called stupid by POTUS

  3. Right, Maggie.

Just what the Cambridge police need, another politician who knows how to play "blame the cops first" right along with the POTUS.

  4. William, you were leading the front on the Scott Brown campaign on the web weeks ago. Most of your articles are far better than the newsprint, I have delivered to my home. It's gonna be a brutal next few days with the smear campaign Martha's putting out in the media every commercial on tv and the radio. Luckily, Scott hasn't been baited into returning the same slimey politics. Tuesday morning 8:00 am, can't come fast enough for my vote. Fingers crossed and steady prayers for my state and country.

  5. You mean to tell me that the patrolman's union in arguably the most liberal city in America in arguably the most liberal state just flipped the bird to the most liberal president and his most liberal agenda in American history?

The union that Martha Coakley's husband once belonged to?

    Is that what you're saying?

Open your dictionary to 'schadenfreude' and there you will find this endorsement in the definition.

    Who's stupid now, Mr. President?

  7. Remember how Obama handled the Skip Gates incident?

Remember what he said about the Cambridge police?

    Hey Obama, actions have consequences!

  8. I do this political stuff for a living. Have for 20 years now, or so...

... and in all my time doing this I have NEVER seen the wheels come off so fast and so far.

I am in a state of constant, head-shaking amazement at how hard this woman is working to, literally, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Books will be written about this. Political science tomes are being rewritten as I post this.

    Absolutely stunning.

  9. Being a 34 year veteran police officer my reaction to this fact was "Wow!" This signals that either the ex-cop was not well liked or respected or worse yet if he was liked and well-respected then Martha is doing such a terrible job that they felt compelled to do this.

  10. This posting is the reason why conservative, and quite frankly, most political bloggers, have very little credibility in the "real world". Most conservative bash and lambaste unions, (despite the fact that without unions, these bloggers would not have the leisure time, w/o the 40 hour work week that unions won, to sit in their pajamas an then blast unions..and they would not have health care also w/o unions) except when it is politically expedient to the blogger. This hypocrisy is what drives the credibility issue with me. When they become more consistent in their beliefs, then when I read a blog the fatalistic light wont shine. I grew up in a union home, and what I don't understand is that the values that unions provide is something that conservative should cherish. I know it is all about the politics, but what about what the benefits union members literarily died for...I watch my Dad fight for his job, and his respect. He provided a great home, raised a great family, and now all my brothers belong to some type of a union. They are all great men and we are all trouble/confused when we see union bashing in print and in TV. It was union fire and police men and woman who ran into the flaming twin towers. Most bloggers and readers most dangerous thing they have done is walk across the street to McD to get fries and shakes.

  11. Very true what you say Buck Johnson , how ever the Unions one and all have abuse their power and need to be reined in .What was once good and an asset is now a libility

  12. Buck Johnson,
Either you dont understand conservative beef with unions are you dont seem to know them.

Unions have been the organizing arm of the Democrat party - this has been the history of unions. Why do you expect conservatives to be blase' about this?

Also can you cite specific instances of union "bashing"? the single biggest complaint that conservatives have regarding unions right now is with Card check - which is a deep infringement of a basic right of a secret ballot.

It looks rather odd that the unions which pushed for 40 hour weeks are openly pushing for the most non democratic means of organizing a work place.

This is exactly why unions have lost credibility - they have over reached so much that even people who may want to support them or completely pissed. America has never had lesser union members than before and this did not happen in some vaccuum.

Conservatives have more suspicions of union leaders than unions themselves - and they are right to do so.

If you want to get more credibility stop taking union dues from conservative members and then using it to campaign for democrats.
