Saturday Night Card Game (Race Card Cockroach Survived Democrats' Nuclear Winter)

This is the latest in a series on the use of the race card for political gain:

The Democratic Party is devoid of ideas, or at least ideas on which it is willing to run.

Those ideas the Democratic Party did have were annihilated in the mid-term elections.  The era of Democrats is not over, but the era of Democratic Party ideology of big government as the solution to everything is over ... at least until the next crisis is not allowed to go to waste.

And the Democrats knew it long before November 2, which is why the Democrats had an explicit and deliberate strategy of basing their campaigns almost exclusively on opposition research to personally attack opponents.  As I have pointed out before and the data on election ads reflect, Republicans mostly ran on ideas and policy and Democrats mostly ran on Aqua Buddha.

There is one aspect of Democratic Party ideology, however, which did survive the nuclear winter of the Democratic Party:  The Race Card.

In fact, the race card is all Democratic Party supporters have left.  Here is a sampling from the week that just was:
  • On the eve of the election, Media Matters and its compatriots managed to get ABC to drop Andrew Breitbart from ABC's election coverage by accusing Breitbart of engaging in "race baiting" and claiming that having him on the coverage was "like rewarding a Klansman."
  • On Election Day, Eugene Robinson of The Washington Post, signalled that the era of the race card would survive the day, even if the Democratic Party majority in the House did not, as he lashed out at Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee and the entire Tea Party movement as inherently racist:  "Obama has made mistakes that rightly cost him political support. But I can't help believing that the tea party's rise was partly due to circumstances beyond his control -- that he's different from other presidents, and that the difference is his race."
  • Eugene Kane, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wholeheartedly agreed with Robinson:  "I'm sure Robinson and the Washington Post will take lots of flak for this Election Day column. BUT I can honestly say that I - and many black journalists who have followed the rise of the Tea Party movement - wholeheartedly agree with everything he's saying."
  • New America Media, "the country's first and largest national collaboration and advocate of 2000 ethnic news organizations," termed last Tuesday "the most racist election in decades."
  • Tim Wise, who describes himself as "among the nation's most prominent anti-racist writers and educators" wrote at DailyKos "I know, you think you’ve taken “your country back” with this election -- and of course you have always thought it was yours for the taking, cuz that’s what we white folks are bred to believe, that it’s ours, and how dare anyone else say otherwise -- but you are wrong."
  • A blogger a Balloon-Juice (the same blog which called Juan Williams a "lawn jockey") wrote that the entire election was just code for racism:  "But of all the undercover code words to scream ‘Nigger, nigger, nigger’, the best is “Center Right Nation”. All that really mens when decoded is “White Nation” and that is what tonight’s Confederate Party gains were all about. It is a story about the white supremacy movement in America reasserting itself."
  • Combining the race card with Palin Derangement Syndrome, a slew of mainstream media (including The Washington Post) concocted an absurd accusation that Sarah Palin had "favorited" a racist tweet (see HotAir for backround).
The race card cockroach is alive and well.  It survived the Democrats' nuclear winter.  Unlike approximately 70 Democratic members of Congress and 650 Democratic members of state legislatures.

  1. So, short of challenging them to duels for their base dishonesty and insults, what is to be done about the Race Card Crew?

  2. @Rob: Laugh at them. Eugene Kane shows up in "my" (actually, Deekawife 3.0 gets it for the coupons) newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (affectionately known around my house as "The Urinal"). Kane considers himself the arbiter of all things racial. There is rarely a column in which he doesn't refer to us white folks as a bunch of racists. It's just what he does. There is a reason the great newspaper of my youth has become a mere shell of its former self.

  3. "Unlike approximately 70 Democratic members of Congress and 650 Democratic members of state legislatures."

How sweet it is. Can't say it enough. Ahhhhh.

Yet they will probably call Allen West, Tim Scott, and Marco Rubio racists, too. Heh. Hoist on their own petard.

Liberals.... They are done. Nothing left. Nobody home. Alinsky's book is exposed. Race cards are powerless no matter how many they throw. (Notice that is about the ONLY card they didn't throw at Christine O'Donnell.)

    Wipeout. On to 2012.

  4. I guess the fact that the tea party supported an African-American for Representative and a Latino for Senator in Florida is irrelevant.

  5. As more and more non-white Republicans and/or conservatives become well-known public figures, the race card will disappear. Of course, I predict that simultaneously "lawn jockeys" will pop up everywhere.

  6. A very important and necessary (key, actually) element of the race card has been annihilated, however. For the race card to work, it has to do more than stir up lunatics on the left (it still does that), it has to cow, control, and suppress the victim. What's happened, happily, over the past year or two is that being called a racist just doesn't matter to most people. Anyone who disagrees with BO is a RAAAACIST? Anyone who opposes the nanny state is a RAAAACIST? Anyone who is conservative, a Christian, white, a patriot, a capitalist, and/or is breathing is a RAAAACIST? Uh huh. Whatever.

Without the power to silence the opposition, they are playing solitaire with that race card.

  7. All this really means is that "racist" is now a word that has no meaning except to indicate that the speaker doesn't like something someone else said.

This is too bad because, alas, we are not without actual, genuine racism and racists and it's harder to single them out if we lack a word that can do so.

There are attempts to redefine the word, e.g. "prejudice plus power." Of course, if that's the definition then whites in Detroit and Atlanta cannot be racists; only blacks can be.

Of course, if in attempting to save some meaning for the word you define it as something along the lines of treating people differently because of race or ascribing qualities to people because of their race, then it is hard to think of any Democratic domestic policy proposal that is not racist.

But we don't want to go into that because leftists are non-racist and their opponents invariably are.

  8. I predict that an upcoming edition of Professor Jacobson's Saturday Night Card Game will feature a Justice Department investigation into a tragic but accidental shooting in Oakland California on January 1 2009. White transit cop shooter, Black transit passenger victim; some people were unhappy with the involuntary manslaughter verdict and the two year sentence. DOJ has already indicated that it will conduct an independent review and decide whether to file federal charges. (Shameless blog pimping in 3, 2, 1...) For more information on the shooting, while you're trying to fill idle time between Legal Insurrection blog posts, you can check out http://is.gd/gOqh6
