Bumper Stickers on Parade

The Ithaca Festival Parade passed by my house yesterday.  Lots of fun:

And my favorite, the Ithaca Area Waste Water Treatment Facility entry:

Should These Colors Even Run The Country?

My guess is that the owner of this vehicle not only objects to these colors running the world, but also is part of the open borders crowd which objects to these colors even running our own country.

A variation on a theme, spotted today in Ithaca:

Gun Laws

I never paid much attention to gun laws.  Now that I've finished my NRA basic handgun course, I'll start on what will be a very, very long process to get a hand gun permit.

The laws are byzantine.  In New York State, where I live about half the year, I need a permit even to possess a handgun at home.  I cannot even shoot at a range using someone else's gun (unless as part of training under the supervision of an NRA certified trainer).  The home possession permit process will take at least six months, maybe longer.  As to a concealed carry permit, I've been told to forget about it in Tompkins County (Ithaca).

But of course, that leaves the other six months.  The Florida non-resident concealed carry permit, which is good in 32 states, is not good in NY or Rhode Island.  In Rhode Island (as far as I can tell with a quick check), I don't need a permit to keep a gun at home or to transport it to a shooting range, but any other use, including transporting it in the car more generally, would require a permit for which I would need to show good cause and need.

Getting from NY to RI requires that I also figure out Massachusetts law on the subject.

Being the law-abiding citizen that I am, I'll spend the time and money to figure out all the local and state laws, and comply with them all.  It will not be easy, and I can see how someone with good intentions still could run afoul of the law.  So maybe a year or so from now I'll have all the permits in place.

Gun control advocates, of which I am one up to a point, can sleep soundly knowing that they have kept a gun out of my law-abiding hands.

The criminals have it much easier. They just buy guns on the street and shoot 'em up:
An Elmira man was wounded in a shooting early Saturday in Ithaca, police said.

Russell Blackman was shot at least three times with a small-caliber firearm, Ithaca police said.

Police said they responded to a report of gun shots around 1:40 a.m. at the 500 block of West Green Street, and found blood on the street and sidewalk. Police did not find Blackman, but they learned he had been taken in a private vehicle to Cayuga Medical Center.
The guy who was shot himself is a fugitive from justice, and apparently he's not talking about the shooter.  And I doubt he's real worried about the gun laws.

Because Reproductive Health Care Is A Cervine Right

I have written before about the moral angst sweeping the upscale Village of Cayuga Heights, bordering the Cornell campus and home to a large number of professors and staff, over how to control the out-of-control deer population.

After years of debate, which tore the community apart, Cayuga Heights has come up with a solution:
The board of trustees passed a resolution Monday night to begin implementation of the phased options approach to deer management. The village will begin with the surgical sterilization of 20-60 does within a two-year period, followed by the culling of the remainder of the herd.
The cost per sterilization? Don't ask:
The first phase of sterilization is estimated to take two years at an average cost of $1,200 per doe, according to the statement.
If they do for our health care system what they've done for the deer of Cayuga Heights, we're sunk.

And the bumper sticker on top of the trunk which is barely visible in the photo above:

Of course, if there really were fascism here, the driver would be in prison by now.

They Don't Really Want To Coexist

How did I not see this vehicle before?  Spotted in a driveway just 100 yards from my house in Ithaca.

No "Coexist" bumper sticker on this vehicular equivalent of Keith Olbermann's brain:

Here is their lawn sign, from warmer weather:

(P.S. - In case you were wondering, this was not the one that go away.)

The Bumper Stickers That Got Away

I pulled into the Wegmans shopping center in Ithaca tonight and saw the mother of all bumper sticker collections on the back of a beat-up sedan.

I'm telling you, this was it, the bumper sticker photo to top all bumper sticker photos.  So much bumper sticker craziness it confused the eye.

But I was driving down the parking aisle and the car was pulling out of a spot.  I would have had to block its path to get the photo.

Faced with the possibility of a collision, or possibly a charge of unlawful imprisonment, I let it get away.

But I'm telling you, this was the big one.

"Granola"

Sure, you have called San Francisco granola city and have joked how a certain NY Times columnist might choke on his granola.

But did you ever imagine in your wildest imagination that someone would put a granola bumper sticker on her car?

Just "granola."  It needs no further explanation.  In that one word and bumper sticker is summed up an entire political philosophy and way of life, and many a stereotype and joke.

Spotted in Ithaca today:

Bonus question:  What would you use for a one-word bumper sticker (a) for liberals, or (b) for conservatives?

Texas Gains Mark Finkelstein

Not long after starting this blog I received an e-mail from Mark Finkelstein, who writes for Newsbusters, and for a while, at his own blog, Finkelblog.

Mark invited me on his long-running conservative talk show, The Right Angle, which had been on local Ithaca cable TV for over a decade.

Two things surprised me.  First, that there was another on-the-record conservative in Ithaca.  Second, that someone would want to have me on his show.

Since that first contact I have appeared on Mark's show several times.  I was honored to be the guest on Mark's last show earlier this week.

Mark always had an encouraging word about this blog, and has an indefatigable energy that is contagious.  In addition to his business developing and operating a student apartment complex, Mark is a pilot, and a writer.

And Mark was the person who took upon himself the burden of publicly arguing for the conservative position in public debates at Ithaca High School and elsewhere.  If ever there were a hopeless and thankless task, preaching conservatism in Ithaca is it, but Mark relished the challenge.

And now after 25 years in Ithaca, Mark is fulfilling the dream of approximately one-half of Northeasterners.  He's moving to Texas.

And better yet, Mark is moving to a community with a private airstrip so he can walk out his door and get into his plane and fly away.  Texas must be a really large country for such a thing to be possible.

I will miss having Mark in Ithaca, and I wish him well in reality.

Hey, At Least We're Winning The War

... on the environment, according to this bumper sticker spotted in Ithaca this morning:

Now if only we could win the war on liberal bumper stickers.

(Bonus question, what's that bumper sticker with the windmill on it?)

Update 2-1-2011:  Commenter Bob wins the prize, for finding the windmill bumper sticker:

Yes, Virginia, There Is A Tea Party In Ithaca

The State of Ithaca, NY, has been the subject of multiple posts here, reflecting on what it is like living in "10 Square Miles Surrounded By Reality."

One question I frequently hear is, "Is there a Tea Party in Ithaca?"

The answer is, yes there is, and thanks to the great work of two Ithaca College students, Kellan Davidson and Samantha Schles, we have video to prove it.  (There also was a recent Ithaca Journal article about the local Tea Party groups.  The Ithaca Tea Party website is here.)

The film below was produced by these students for a journalism documentary class project.

What is remarkable about the film (other than the amazing bumper sticker shots -- how come I didn't see those first?) is that it was done in a very non-judgmental manner.  According to the students:
"We produced the video after being honestly very surprised that there was a tea party movement in Ithaca. We were curious to see how a grassroots conservative movement operated and sustained itself in a liberal hotbed like Ithaca. We also wanted to take a politically-agnostic look at the interaction between the two opposing views in the community. Our main goal was to build a coherent, objective narrative that didn't glorify the notions of either side, because in the end politics is about conversation."
The film will give you some small idea what it is like to live in Ithaca.  (Expressions of emotional support are encouraged.)

Now Known As The "Coffee and Caring Club"

I will not mention the entity whose name is banned from these pages by popular vote, even though it appears that at least one of its branches doesn't even want to use its name anymore.

I merely will quote an article (emphasis mine):
The Coffee Party Ithaca Area changed its name to better depict issues worked on. Coffee and Caring Club Ithaca Area is the new name.

Lyn Stone, organizer said, "We're a local grassroots organization that works on humanitarian, social and political issues that affect our community. We care about the citizenry, have compassion for defenseless animals and affect change by applauding the good and giving praise to those who help make a positive difference."
Clearly, this is a reactionary uprising:
The next meetup is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16 at the Triphammer Mall location of Ithaca Bakery. In honor of Martin Luther King's birthday, Carol Kammen, author, lecturer, historian and columnist for The Ithaca Journal, will be the guest speaker. She will talk about her article "Any Person" regarding Cornell's yes you can attend policy when it first began in the 1860s. The only requirement was academic preparation. The color of ones skin, religion, sex, class, etc., was of no concern for admission.
That sort of attitude will get you in a lot of trouble these days.

Did they leave the [unmentionable group] voluntarily or were they kicked out?

"So at what point in time should global warming have stopped?"

An op-ed in The Christian Science Monitor poses the question, Would Global Warming Be So Bad?
What has always troubled me the most with the view that we needs to stop "climate change" in the form of "global warming" is the idea that it would be bad if the Earth became warmer.
The writer, a Swedish free-market economist (talk about lonely) points out that some regions would benefit, some would suffer:
So what is there to say that the pre-industrial era climate is really the optimal climate? That the benefits of a possible warmer climates wouldn't outweigh the disadvantages? I have asked that many times to Al Gore supporters and either gotten no answer at all, or some list of alleged (and exaggerated) disadvantages that completely overlooked the benefits.
This is a point I made before, Thanks Global Warming, in which I noted that Ithaca once was under two miles of ice.  I asked the question
"So at what point in time should global warming have stopped?"
I have yet to hear the answer.
