I comment as a retired military ...I must disagree. I comment as a retired military officer. The issue is with the "command climate" for which the Commanding General is responsible. Further, by allowing such a climate to exist, the Commander-in-Chief lost confidence in the ability of the general to command; such ability necessarily including the wholehearted execution of the President's strategy.
That said, one must question the strategy of the President in Afghanistan, his half-measures are clearly not working, as was predicted, and we must remember where the buck stops.B-Daddyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13880092017105841256noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1522121129844880066.post-42911792921384412112010-06-28T21:44:16.296-04:002010-06-28T21:44:16.296-04:00In my humble opinion, this may be Obama's firs...In my humble opinion, this may be Obama's first step in a three-step program to close down the Afghan war.

The next step will be to find some horrible flaw in the performance of General Petraeus, and remove him in 'disgrace', with the help of the MSM. I clearly remember Senator Obama heaping public opprobrium on Petraeus regarding the surge, and I don't believe that Petraeus's success at it mad poor Obama feel any better.

And the third step (the first under total control of Obama) will be to appoint yet another unlucky General to preside over the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the Middle East while he's at it.Insufficiently Sensitivehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10285845812788767014noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1522121129844880066.post-5168608349435036242010-06-28T14:48:27.336-04:002010-06-28T14:48:27.336-04:00General Stanley McChrystal, the nation’s expert o...General Stanley McChrystal, the nation’s expert on unconventional warfare, has been fired by Barack H. Obama.

Various talking heads, especially on The Right, seem to think this is a sign of weakness on Obama’s part. They seem to think it means that he is really thin-skinned, and took the comments from the Rolling Stone article much too personally. Obama is, in fact, really thin-skinned, but that isn’t what motivated the firing of McChrystal.

Various talking heads are pooh-poohing the Stone article, noting that McChrystal didn’t say all that much himself, and that the quotes from members of his staff are not attributed. They correctly point out that the sentiments expressed in the article are true.

That they are true is beside the point. In the Uniform Code of Military Justice, by which McChrystal and his subordinates are bound, we find a rather delightful phrase in Article 89, which deals with insubordination toward a superior commissioned officer: “… truth is no defense …”. Apparently those who framed the UCMJ understood not every officer is a military genius. While one might correctly argue that Obama is not a superior commissioned officer, the facts are that he is the commander-in-chief; McChrystal is one of his subordinates; and then we have Article 88, which deals with disrespect toward the president and other civilian authority. The two articles combined form a significant part of the basis for discipline within the chain-of-command, and express the foundation for civilian control of the nation’s military. McChrystal failed utterly in his duty in this respect. The right should not let their dislike for Obama and/or his policies cloud that essential fact.

This was all explained by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen: "I cannot excuse his lack of judgment with respect to the Rolling Stone article or a command climate he evidently permitted that was at best disrespectful of civilian authority. We do not have that luxury, those of us in uniform."

Note that Mullen talks about the command climate. Note that McChrystal does not dispute that the article is factually correct. This is the crux of the matter. McChrystal not only tolerated, but encouraged, an obvious atmosphere of disrespect for civilian command authority to exist in his command.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), himself a military lawyer, observed: “… let me just say this to these officers who are unnamed … I understand you’re warriors and you’ve been shot at and you’re brave. But you let yourself and your Army down. The language used, the cavalier attitude, the disrespect, even though you may have disagreement, was unacceptable.
This is a low point, in my view, for the Armed Forces in a very long time. And I am glad the president made this decision. And some other officers need to be looked at.”

McChrystal, as a commanding general, would never have tolerated such an attitude in his subordinate commands were that attitude directed as his leadership. It is unreasonable, and inherently dangerous, to expect Barack H. Obama to tolerate it from his generals.

Why is it dangerous? It is essential to our nation’s well-being that the military be kept on a short leash by civilian authority. The Right is full of self-styled Constitutional experts. They should understand this better than those on the left, whom they accuse of undermining the Constitution at every opportunity. Or would they prefer the likes of General James Matoon Scott?

McChrystal has been fired, and General Petraeus has been demoted in order to fill McChrystal’s place. The insubordination has been dealt with. Now, what will the commander-in-chief do to address McChrystal’s truths?CatLoverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02715764013637623114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1522121129844880066.post-36118627748181555942010-06-28T11:25:46.376-04:002010-06-28T11:25:46.376-04:00I have no argument with Archer52. I believe that Obama owes the country a clear and rational explanation of his war aims and their projected benefit; as well as the cost of the alternative. I just realized that I typed "clear and rational". Oh well.

But, back to the McChrystal kerfuffle. I have felt since people actually started reading the RS article, and thereby putting the lie to the first hysterical pronouncements, that there were clearly differing options for the Regime. The whole thing could have been shrugged off; or it could be used as pretext for dumping McC. Clearly, they chose the latter. Why? I don't know; but I am confident that it was more complex (and sinister?) than what we have been told.

My 25 years of Navy service spanned the whole of Viet Nam. I really thought we would never get ourselves into another situation in which we were muddling along without a clear sense of purpose, led by political buffoons who were not committed, but couldn't figure how to lose without appearing to lose.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03515131550340085733noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1522121129844880066.post-18315470048601560612010-06-28T09:01:39.254-04:002010-06-28T09:01:39.254-04:00No one should compare the last war to the next for...No one should compare the last war to the next for any other reason than tactical reference. Vietnam is not Iraq, Iraq is not Afghanistan. (which is where they are making the mistake here)

McChrystal committed the sin that he accused Jones of doing, living in the past. SF guys think that with enough time and money they can "secure and hold" land by winning over "hearts and minds." It was a theory they practiced in Vietnam with limited success.

But this isn't Vietnam. We aren't fighting communists. We are fighting a bunch of lightly organized tribes, each only worried about their own way of life. I have people over there and that is the consistent theme I hear coming back.

Everybody says that Afghanistan cannot be conquered. That is a lie. It has been conquered over and over and over. The trouble comes when you get it, you don't know what to do with it! It's like seizing a porta-potty. Now what? Do you make is a third bedroom, a foyer, a lawn ornament?

If the ore deposits are as big as they say, maybe that will cause the interest to peak and remain, short of that we are going to be playing "Whack a mole" for years. My buddy put it best when he said that we aren't fighting against the current generation of half retarded, ninth century, tribal members; but for the next generation of kids that don't know there is a better life outside the tribe.

That is a twenty to thirty year commitment. Even then, in the end we may be left with a somewhat better educated, poor, high desert land that looks like a porta-potty with some plants growing out of it, sitting in our front yard.

It is what it is.archer52https://www.blogger.com/profile/03284508120593653198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1522121129844880066.post-1924426601186029232010-06-28T04:13:45.846-04:002010-06-28T04:13:45.846-04:00Sometimes when one tries all the open avenues to b...Sometimes when one tries all the open avenues to be heard and fails, desperation causes mistakes, or are they?

I haven't heard anyone compare this to Vietnam in years.... but an Army can not move forward with it's hands tied behind their backs.

But then, the Viet Cong didn't want to come to Cleveland and kill us either.@elohhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15974297923741455898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1522121129844880066.post-68009590079232601532010-06-27T23:33:02.195-04:002010-06-27T23:33:02.195-04:00The guy voted for Obama. Obama has no sense of connection to anyone but himself so he does not "get" the anguish his death dealing policies have on the soldiers and their parents. McChrystal was frustrated and a true warrior. I know where he is coming from.
