"Republicans were put in power to limit the size and scope of the federal government," Harper said. "And they're working to grow the federal government, increase its intrusiveness, and I fail to see where the Fourth Amendment permits the government to require dragnet surveillance of Internet users."

Note that this is the first thing they want to do. This is their priority. Per my previous comment, they want to restrict liberty in order to "give law enforcement the tools it needs". This country was not founded so law enforcement could have the tools it wants.

Right now I'm squelching a lot of language that I might regret to see preserved under my byline. In particular, I would replace Harper's 'pro-regulatory Republicans' with expressions incompatible with objective discourse.

My interest in a third party has just soared.

Despair is said to be a sin, but my thoughts turn in the direction of Let It Burn.gshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17953008291916883288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1522121129844880066.post-44685788475971721612011-01-30T18:15:24.051-05:002011-01-30T18:15:24.051-05:00Wendy: My bad because (1) I trusted Kathleen's...Wendy: My bad because (1) I trusted Kathleen's endorsement ("I love the work they do") without any further checking, and (2) I don't want Obama to have the "kill switch" here either and reacted emotionally.

So now my own endorsement is out there on the net (good thing I'm a small fish in the pond).lgstarrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02752386918407342437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1522121129844880066.post-69985402635633043952011-01-30T15:37:10.746-05:002011-01-30T15:37:10.746-05:00lgstarr, I didn't sign the petition because I&...lgstarr, I didn't sign the petition because I'd rather see connectivity down than see the muslim brotherhood use it to rally the troops, so to speak. Neither of the two principle authors of this proposal are in any way "conservative". They are both "progressive". Most of the Bush administration was also "progressive", btw, not "conservative".

Lets together fight the fight against government control without resorting to cheap political demagoguery. No doubt some in the US government, on hearing of Egypt's success in muffling its Internet, reacted with envy.

2. COICA might already be law if not for liberal Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR). Hopefully Egypt will be a caveat when the authoritarians and corporatist parasites reintroduce COICA via their Congressional sockpuppets.

3. Having tipped my hat to Sen. Wyden, I also spit on the shoes of "conservatives" who refuse to acknowledge the tradeoff between liberty and security, choosing instead to reflexively bray about "giving law enforcement the tools it needs".

4. Obviously there are serious threats to national security that propagate online. My point is that way too many people in government, and their special-interest backers, view national security as a pretext to expand their power and restrict liberty.

5.
